A right royal puzzle

All of London, indeed every person in the United Kingdom and the wider Commonwealth as well as those in friendly republics, especially former British colonies, are bursting with excitement at the prospect of witnessing His Majesty King Charles III’s coronation that is now just a few weeks away on 6 May.

The excitement here in London – which, to be honest, I and other royal correspondents still feel in our hearts is the centre of the empire – is palpable.

Unfortunately, on such occasions there is always a “fly in the ointment”, as the old saying goes.

This time it is the continued speculation about the involvement or non-involvement in the coronation spectacle of their non-royal highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. (Pictured above with their firstborn child Archie)

It is a sad fact of life that the standing of both Prince Harry and his wife, the US-born former Meghan Markle, in the eyes of the British public has sunk to a very low ebb since their decision a few years back to end their roles as working members of the Royal Family and to start a new life in California.

Reasons they give for their damaged reputation include allegations that unidentified royal courtiers and even some royals themselves have been briefing media outlets with damaging claims about the couple.

In the lead-up to His Majesty’s big day I spoke to several of my very reliable Buckingham Palace sources in a bid to determine the truth.

“One does not wish to pass judgement on the pair,” one of my very reliable sources told me. “But their new tawdry lives in the USA are seemingly based entirely on their vacuous celebrity status which in turn is based on the regular pot-shots they have taken at the blameless and hard-working Royal Family they left behind.

“Ms Markle in particular has grown to become one of the most disliked people in Britain. One finds it hard to understand how a young woman such as her who had a very successful career as a C-grade actor on a cheap and racy America TV show is now one of the most disliked people among the British public.”

Another source was just as puzzled, saying: “One is at a loss to determine how and why a talentless, self-centred trollop like her has lost the status she once had in British hearts.”

Many of my sources were equally unsure about why the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, continued to complain about the Royal Family and the activities of its courtiers and household staff.

“It is difficult to know what more the Royal Family and senior royal staffers such as my good self could do for him,” a long-serving palace source confided to me.

“I have personally been arranging his latest visit to the UK, now that he has decided to take a break from that black banshee he is shackled to and attend his father’s coronation.

“I have sent him via email details of some very affordable flights from Los Angeles to the UK, with a few being real bargains if he is prepared to fly in and out of Birmingham or Cardiff instead of London

“I have also drafted a list of available flats drawn from the Air BNB website, with many quite close to Buckingham Palace.

“In addition, I even sent a voucher for a pre-loaded Oyster card that will allow him to use all London bus, underground, rail, and tram lines while he is here.

“Really, what more could one possibly do for him?” my source said with an air of genuine exasperation.
