Focus on Dutton in Aston wash-up

The upset result in yesterday’s Aston by-election has raised doubts about the future of Peter Dutton as leader of the federal Liberal Party and in particular his practice of opposing almost everything the Albanese Government puts forward. The Bug took to the streets of Aston to test voter reaction.

Mrs Peta D. Utton aged 51 — housewife visiting from Dayboro, near Brisbane

“I don’t think he’s been too negative. In fact he hasn’t been negative enough in my view. I think the Liberal Party should stick with him: after all who else is there? I don’t no, do you no? Who else has the no-how to do the job? Who else has the experience to no when to say no to every single government initiative?”

Albany Anthonese aged 60 – part-time DJ visiting from Balmain, Sydney

“I reckon the Libs would be mad not to stick by Mr Dutton. He is the leader they really need right now, and for the next two, maybe three terms of the federal parliament. Now if you’ll excuse me I need to rest after breaking all land and air speed records getting here from Tasmania after watching the by-election results come in last night.”

Freya Denberg aged 50 – housewife, Moonee Ponds, Melbourne

“I personally think the Liberal Party needs a new leader. Preferably from Victoria, Preferably from inner-Melbourne. But where would I ….. I mean, where would someone who is a moderate (within the Liberal Party context) and who really should already be party leader find a seat these days?”

Talcum Murnbull aged 67 – retired drag queen visiting from Elizabeth Bay, Sydney.

“I’ll let others be the judge of just how brilliantly the Liberal Party would have performed in Aston under the leadership of our nation’s very successful 29th prime minister. He is a great loss to our nation but would, I believe, answer the call to serve again if asked. Please ask. Please.”

Cam Jamesbell age and IQ unknown – Liberal Party PR flak from Melbourne

“I’m totally at a loss to understand why almost all of the nation’s political commentators failed to pick that an electorate of inner-city moderate voters wouldn’t support a candidate with an impeccable hard-right political CV standing for a party that has shifted to the far right of the political spectrum, and is led by a hard-right, unimaginative, visionless, ex-copper political thug. Surely someone close to the failed Liberal candidate could have seen the result coming.”
