Newspoll prompts News probe

SUPER TAX CHANGES:

A special Royal Commission will be established to further investigate the Albanese Government’s proposed changes to superannuation tax arrangements following publication of a “rogue” Newspoll backing the plan.

The Newspoll published today and conducted for News Corp Australia’s national broadshit The Australian shows 64% of respondents support the plan to double the concessional tax rate for income from super balances of more than $3 million.

Even a majority of Coalition voters – 54% – also support the changes despite federal Opposition Leader Peter Dutton declaring the Liberal and National parties plan to vote and campaign against the changes and overturn them if elected in 2025.

In the wake of the results, News Corp Australia said it would establish its own “permanent rolling Royal Commission” to further investigate the planned tax changes.

“Clearly the changes need further examination by a trusted, independent body such as News Crap Australia given the blatant disconnect between the Newspoll and what we have already told voters about the frightening tax changes and the obvious flow-on of huge and punitive taxes of family homes,” News Crap Australia spokesperson Lloyd Tabb said.

“News Crap Australia has been banging on about how badly the tax plan was being received across the community since it was announced – attacking it mercilessly 24/7 across all our newspapers, Sky News, and any other outlet we own or control.

“Yet this obviously rogue Newspoll shows overwhelming voter support. Not only are the results not correct, they’re just not Right. Clearly we need to do more work.”

Mr Tabb said the new Royal Commission would be led by Justice Peta Credlin who would be assisted by Justice Andrew Bolt, Justice James Morrow, and Justice Chris Kenny. (main picture)

“We believe the new Royal Commission has a good spread of judicial skills and experience,” he said.

“It will begin its work immediately and will issue regularly reports on the super tax scandal, in fact daily reports, which will be published in News Crap Australia outlets.

“In addition to the esteemed judges leading the Commission, it will also have dozens of counsels assisting it who will also be providing daily reports in all our outlets. James Campbell, Vikki Campion and Janet Albrechtsen are just three of those counsels assisting. There are many, many others.”

Mr Tabb said the terms of reference for the Royal Commission required it to report no later than election day in 2025.

“It would be obviously highly inappropriate of me to pre-empt the Commission’s findings and its ultimate central recommendation for voters to vote Liberal,” he said.
