The latest kerfuffle sparked by allegations of a right royal dust-up between His Non-Royal Highness Prince Harry the Duke Of Sussex and his brother and heir to the throne His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales Prince William (main picture) prompted me to thumb through some of my previous reports about tensions within the House of Windsor.
It is always very difficult for professional royal correspondents such as me to verify any such claims of a physical altercation between members of the House of Windsor.
After all one wasn’t present when, as Prince Harry claims, his brother indulged in a bit of pushing and shoving that caused the younger sibling to incur physical injuries when as a result he fell onto a broke a dog’s feeding dish.
I must say I do find the latest story being attributed to Prince Harry somewhat difficult to believe, especially given what we all know about the use of computer-generated imagery to make “deep fake” videos and the like.
Was it really Prince Harry giving the interview that generated the current story?
In addition, I have almost met both princes on numerous occasions and find such alleged behaviour on the part of either young royal difficult to believe.
But last night, as I flicked through my files, I did chance upon a report of mine from exactly three years ago that put to rest suggestions of a similar alleged “rift” between the then Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – Prince William and his wife Kate – and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – Prince Harry and his wife the former Meghan Markle.
The story I had written appeared in The Bug in January 2019 and exposed the shallowness of claims that Kate and Meghan were not getting along just months after the former US actor joined the royal family by marrying Prince Harry.
At the time I had made it my mission to get to the bottom of the stories about a so-called “feud” between the two royal wives.
To do so I first spoke to one of the royal family’s press officers and told him I wanted to determine the facts of the matter, while admitting I did not for a moment believe the rumours to be true.
He was very helpful and quickly arranged for me to attend, in an exclusive capacity mind you, a private event in the grounds of Kensington Palace where he promised I could see for myself how well the two women interacted.
The condition for such exclusive access was that I could observe discreetly and from a distance but not ask any questions.
Fair enough, I thought at the time, so I arrived at the appointed time at the gates to Kensington Palace in London and was led by the press officer to the garden where, on rounding a tall hedge, I saw a picture of total friendship and relaxed familiarity.
Quickly snapping a photo on my phone camera I caught the Duchess of Cambridge playfully nudging the Duchess of Sussex into the palace swimming pool (below).

Well, the press officer chap insisted it was a swimming pool although it did have a considerable quantity of water plants as well as some observable fish swimming in it.
I was then able to observe the then Duchess of Cambridge helpfully trying to restyle Meghan’s hair, in a very vigorous manner using both hands with a very firm grip (below).

Then, out of nowhere, Prince William appeared carrying a very cute little puppy dog.
He gave Meghan a distinct wave, some sort of secret royal acknowledgment I suspect (below) and started talking to her in rather loud tones, although what was being said escaped me.

I must confess I was captivated by the little puppy and, when asked, the press officer advised me that William and Kate had named it Meghan.
A bitch? I inquired, to which he nodded while leading me, quite forcefully I must say, to the palace gates.
But even so I was able to capture a picture of sheer royal playfulness as Prince William helped his wife out of the pool (below).

I assume he also helped Meghan out of the pool too. But by now the three royals were out of my sight as the press officer pushed me towards the palace gates.
I recall that he was very agitated and was insisting that I not write about what I had just observed.
But he fell silent when I told him that despite the brevity of my visit, I was grateful to have had the opportunity to confirm there was no ill will among the younger royals.
I suspect the same situation prevails three years later and that the latest “revelations” by the chap posing as Prince Harry in all the recent media interviews preceding the launch of HNRH the Duke of Sussex’s memoirs are equally groundless.
After all, it takes a lot to fool a hard-bitten and highly professional royal reporter such as my good self.
