Outcome in the balance

News Crap Australia today delivers an example of its idea of what constitutes balance in the coverage of Australian politics.

Its Melbourne turdbloid The Sunday Herald Sun thoughtfully devotes its front page to the Liberal Party leader, Matthew Guy, and his plans for what he will do when he becomes Premier of Victoria at next Saturday’s state election. (main picture)

Our MGH researchers acknowledge that the story used the expression “if” he becomes Premier but add that, knowing News Crap Australia, “if” was probably just a typo.

Mr Guy is helpfully given a double-page spread inside to expand on his plans for when, sorry, if he gets the top job. (below)

There is also a page in today’s edition devoted to Liberal Party PR agent Peta Credlin’s column which, yet again, is pretty much a how-to-vote card for her major client. (below)

Not to undersell the importance of the democratic decision Victorian voters are set to make in just a few days, The Sunday Herald Sun, also devotes a full page to its editorial advocating a vote for Dan Andrews and Labor. (below)

Just kidding! Our MGH teams wanted to include that little joke just to see if you were paying attention.

Of course the full-page editorial directs voters to turf out Andrews and Labor and install Guy and the Libs.

“Where’s the balanced coverage?” we hear you ask.

Well, if anyone complains about the double-page news spread outlining Guy’s plans as Premier, The Sunday Herald Sun evens up the scales by giving Dan Andrews a double-page spread of his own – kicking shit out of him for alleged delays in a major roads project. (below)

No doubt if the Labor Party complains and seeks a free kick on the scale handed to the Libs today they’ll be told by News Crap Australia that it should be no problem, no problem at all.

Our MGH teams suggest that News Crap may even generously offer Andrews equal space or even more in the very next edition of The Sunday Herald Sun.

The Media Glass House hears that veteran ABC politics journalist Barrie Cassidy has been sent for both Hearing Australia and Specsavers testing after his comment that Victorian Opposition Leader Mathew Guy and his Liberals were “seemingly” making some headway in the state election.

While the MGH can accept that Cassidy might be referring to narrowing gaps in some opinion polls, we also think a politics observer of his experience and stature should have been looking at the overall election campaign which has been an unmitigated disaster for the LNP.

Sadly, Cassidy might have been paying too much attention to what the mainstream mediocre have been saying during the campaign.
