New bin is a win-win

Social housing groups have welcomed plans by the Andrews Government in Victoria for the statewide introduction of a fourth household waste bin.

The government plans to introduce a fourth, purple-lidded bin for recyclable glass products in addition to the current yellow-topped recycling bin, a green bin for garden waste, and a red-lidded bin for all other household rubbish. (below)

A spokesperson for Victorian social housing groups said the fourth bin was “a very timely development”.

“Our research shows most households will struggle to even partially fill the new bin, leaving plenty of room for its use as housing for people currently without permanent shelter,” she said.

“We suggest the new bins should be viewed as new ‘tiny homes’ which should go a long way to ease the homelessness crisis in Victoria and we encourage other states and territories to follow the lead of the Andrews Government.”
