Anyone else notice the new tune the mainstream media political choir has been singing this past week or so?
In full throated agreement, they’ve been pumping out a lovely tune, The new anti-corruption commission must have full parliamentary support or it’ll be a dud!“
Have you ever heard such bullshit? According to these songsters, Labor, the party that has finally introduced a National Anti-Corruption Commission that a majority of Australians have wanted for the past near-decade of LNP rule, must bring the Opposition on side or otherwise the new body will be somehow tainted or diminished.
Really? In whose fucking eyes? Phillip Coorey’s?
The LNP’s sole aim in government the past nine wasted years seemed to be to wedge Labor on everything they could possibly think of.
And now Albanese’s mob appears to have weakened the legislation for the NACC to appease Opposition Leader Peter Dutton who wanted all of its hearings to be held in private.
Were I Albanese, I would have told Dutton to fuck right off, diplomatically of course. I would have immediately reversed the wording in the legislation and made it that hearings would only be held in private under exceptional circumstances. That’s what so many good people are calling for.
And no-one summed it up better than Tealster Monique Ryan. the Member for Kooyong, who put it plain and simple: Sunlight is a wonderful disinfectant.
This stupid obsession of Albanese’s to appear to be conciliatory and inclusive and pragmatic on this particular issue is madness to this old ranter raised in the “crash through or crash” Whitlam mode. The LNP steadfastedly refused to bring in an anti-corruption body with real teeth. I would have hung them out to dry and let them continue to die off as a political force in this country.
The NACC was going to be warmly and gratefully received by a solid majority of Australians even if Labor had just sought the input and then support of the Greens and ACT Senator Pocock. Bringing Dutton onside in any shape or form gives The Spud with Dead Eyes legitimacy and a totally undeserved place at the table.
I would have wedged Dutton with such force that his eyes would have bulged so much they would have looked almost normal.
