One for the “seemed like a good idea at the time” category, perhaps?
The announcer on ABC radio 612 4QR recently talked eloquently and sympathetically about the tragic deaths in a Cessna crash of business leader in Queensland’s agricultural industry Tom Strachan, 48, his son Noah, 20, and pilot Garry Liehm, 63.
The report added that Tom graduated from Brisbane Grammar School in 1990 and Noah in 2019, with the school expressing its deepest sympathies and extending any help possible to the Strachan family.
And the song played straight after all this: Cat Stevens’ Father and Son. It’s a father’s lament that his son never listens to him and pleading with the son to live a good life, take his time, find a girl, settle down, get married if he wants to….
Perhaps the song was already in the day’s play list and slotted to be used at that time? Or, as the MGH fears more likely, an unfortunate spur-of-the-moment selection from someone too young to know what Father and Son was all about?

Our MGH research teams have never really warmed to Johannes Leak as the editorial cartoonist for fare-right wing media mogul Rupert Murdoch’s far-right wing national broadshit The Australian.
They have always regarded him as being nowhere near as incisive in his work as his late father who knew how to be provocative and entertaining while making a point with a few lines, a talk bubble or two, or a caption.
Our researchers think Johannes most often takes the easy way out and merely reflects the dominant right-wing views of his bosses.
Take the cartoon in Monday’s edition of The Oz. (below).

It’s Johannes’s interpretation of US President Joe Biden’s landmark speech last week pointing out the risks to the very existence of America’s democratic system and freedoms posed by the rantings of 2020 election loser Donald Trump and his far-right wing Make America Great Again followers including elected Republic Party legislators and officials at state and federal levels who still use the lie of Trump’s “win” to justify changing the US electoral system to ensure their re-election so that they can change and dismantle more of it.
Some leading political observers in the US are now starting to use or ask if we should be using the label “fascists” or “fascism” when discussing these type of actions.
Yet Johannes Leak portrays the Biden speech as the US leader berating his opponents.
It’s cheap, lazy, and wrong in the view of our MGH teams. But worse, it is a prime example of “fake news” that appears on the same day Trump himself took a similar line on the Biden speech and, of all things, declared the President who actually won the 2020 election fairly and squarely and seeks to defend the democratic system as “an enemy of the state”.
